After the Ukraine talks between representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the USA in Abu Dhabi, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) denounced Russia’s unwillingness to compromise. After the negotiations at the weekend he mainly had “a Russia’s stubborn insistence on the crucial territorial issue“, said Wadephul during a visit to the Latvian capital Riga. The prerequisite for a reliable peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is “that Russia shows a willingness to conclude a peace at all,” said the Foreign Minister at a press conference. If there is no flexibility on the part of Russia, I am afraid that the negotiations could take a long time,” he added. “That is why we in Europe must now prepare ourselves for the fact that we will continue to be required to support Ukraine.”
Wadephul also called for tougher action against the so-called Russian shadow fleetwith which Moscow is trying to circumvent sanctions on its oil sales. International maritime law urgently needs to be amended, said the CDU politician in Riga. Current law prevents action against ships and those behind them. “It cannot be the case that our hands are permanently tied here.” “Much more effectiveness in combating this shadow fleet” is needed, demanded Wadephul. Action is already being taken against the ships and those behind them in the sanctions packages at EU level. But there has to be one in-depth exchange between the Baltic Sea partners give. In addition, it must also be possible to take action against ships whose flag status is unclear – i.e. where it is unclear in which country the tankers are registered. “We must now use all options available under maritime law to stop such ships,” said the Federal Foreign Minister.
