It was reported that Trae Young could leave the Atlanta Hawks and ESPN shared Wednesday that the star point guard would be keen to join the ranks of the Washington Wizards.
Always according to ESPNthe player’s agents, Aaron Mintz, Drew Morrison and Austin Brown, are in discussions with Hawks management to resolve this situation. The Atlanta team is reportedly having conversations on several fronts regarding Young.
The latter has a $49 million option on his contract for the next off-season. He could also end his pact at the end of the campaign and become a free agent at that time, which would at that time offer $40 million in space on the Hawks’ payroll.
The 27-year-old is the organization’s all-time leader in three-pointers and assists. The one selected in the 2018 draft has led the Hawks to the playoffs three times in eight years, including a run to the East Finals in 2021.
Young has been limited to just 10 games this season due to leg injuries. He has not been in uniform in his team’s last five games.
Young has career averages of 25.2 points and 9.8 assists per game.
The Hawks seem at peace with the idea of turning the page with the emergence of Jalen Johnson who is posting impressive averages of 23.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.4 assists in 34 games this season.
The Wizards occupy 14e and second-to-last in the East, with a record of 10-25. They are only ahead of the Indiana Pacers (6-31).
