Dominik Szoboszlai has developed strongly since his move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool FC in the summer of 2023.
The ex-Salzburger is one of the flagships of the “Reds” and is playing a very good season – even if he recently cut an unfortunate figure with a mistake against Barnsley and a missed penalty against Burnley.
“You know how things work in football”
The Hungarian’s contract with LFC runs until 2028. Talks about a new contract have already started.
“There is always progress, but no decision has been made yet. I will just continue to do my best for the team and the fans every week, in every training session. Let’s see what the future brings. There have been discussions, but definitely no decision has been made yet,” English media quoted Szoboszlai as saying.
The 25-year-old is happy in Liverpool. At the same time, he emphasizes: “We know how things work in football. That has to be taken into account.”
Criticism from the Barsnley coach
Szoboszlai also speaks about the statement by Barnsley coach Conor Hourihane, who criticized the midfielder after his failed “Fersler”.
“I found it (the attempted Fersler back pass, note) a bit disrespectful,” Hourihane said. “I don’t think he’ll do that against Chelsea or Arsenal. I don’t think he’ll do that in a Champions League game.”
Szoboszlai clarified: “I made a mistake against Barnsley, but I have to make it clear that I don’t think it was disrespectful. I would do the same against Arsenal, (Manchester) City and Chelsea. I didn’t want to pass the ball back to Giorgi (Mamardashvili, ed.). I wanted to keep playing, but I tried to pretend I was playing back, just to make that clear.”
