FC Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements last summer led the club’s sporting department to Twente left-footed central defender Ruud Nijstad, SPORT reported. Following the departures of Ronald Araujo and Álvaro Cortés, the Catalan club entered the market for a defender to fill the void, though no formal signing materialized. Despite missing out on his signature, Barcelona scouts continue to monitor the 18-year-old Dutchman as his role expands in the Eredivisie.
Ninety-Five Percent Passing Accuracy and Aerial Dominance
Nijstad stands 1.95 meters tall, a physical profile that provides immediate strength in aerial duels. Beyond his height, the young center-back excels at initiating attacks from the back and demonstrates strong decision-making under pressure. These traits align closely with the requirements of Hansi Flick’s tactical system, which relies on a high defensive line.

The defender began the campaign alternating between the bench and the starting lineup. However, following a mid-August fixture against Dunajská Streda, Nijstad secured a regular starting role. He has since logged 1,260 minutes across both the Eredivisie and the UEFA Conference League.
Masterclass Against Zwolle Draws Under-21 Call-Up
Performance metrics underscore Nijstad’s rapid rise this season. During a league fixture against Zwolle, the central defender won every single duel and completed 92 of 97 attempted passes for a 95 percent success rate. He also connected on every delivery into the final third, highlighting his capacity to drive the ball forward.
Those displays for the fifth-placed Eredivisie side prompted the Netherlands national team to issue a call-up. Nijstad was selected for the Under-21 squad ahead of matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, though he remained an unused substitute in both fixtures.
Domestic form carried over into European competition. On Oct. 15, Nijstad delivered a standout performance in a narrow Conference League victory over Swiss side Thun. He finished with 95 percent passing accuracy and completed 91 percent of his passes into the final third.
Tactical Flexibility at Left-Back Under John van den Brom
Twente manager John van den Brom has tested Nijstad outside of his customary central role, deploying him as a left-back in victories against ADO Den Haag and PSV. While the teenager adapted to the wider defensive assignment, his offensive impact was reduced compared to his preferred position in the center of the defense.
Despite the positional experiments, Nijstad remains firmly on the radar of major European clubs, a reality acknowledged by Twente technical secretary Erik Ten Hag.
Nijstad’s next fixture with Twente follows the current international window as the club resumes Eredivisie play.
