Shock at HSV: Stefan Kuntz surprisingly quits
Surprising personnel changes at HSV: Sports director Stefan Kuntz will be leaving the club for family reasons. He has been chairman of the club’s board since summer 2024.
A big bang at Hamburger SV: Stefan Kuntz is no longer on the board of the Hanseatic League. As the Bundesliga club announced on Friday, the club agreed to terminate the contract with the 63-year-old. After Christmas, Kuntz asked the supervisory board to terminate his duties immediately “for personal family reasons.”
“Sometimes there are more important things than football. That’s the case for me now,” said Kuntz: “I don’t want to say anything more about it and ask that you respect that. I would like to thank HSV for a great year and a half. I wish the teams and the entire office the best.”

Kuntz started his job in May 2024 and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the “Rothosen” in 2025. “Stefan has achieved a lot with his team. We wish him all the best for his personal future,” said the chairman of the supervisory board, Michael Papenfuß. Despite the leadership’s departure, HSV continues to see itself well positioned for the tasks ahead.
The HSV professionals will start preparing for the second half of the season this Friday. The kick-off is on January 10th away from home in Freiburg.
