Sparta Lands Suchomel Despite Arm Break & Rival Interest

Combined with the departure of Angelo Preciado to Brazil, this is a big deal. Football Sparta lost the injured Martin Suchomel less than two weeks before the start of the spring part of the Chance League. The winger broke his hand in Friday’s training session against Malmö (0:1), which the Prague team later confirmed on the club’s website.

He substituted after about fifteen minutes, leaving the field in pain. Suchomel, who intervened against Malmö in the second half, held his hand after one of the hard clashes. It didn’t look good at all, that’s why only nineteen-year-old Petr Zíka jumped onto the lawn for him.

A subsequent examination confirmed a larger health problem. Suchomel broke his arm, and according to information from Sport daily and the iSport website, the Spartans will be out for at least six weeks, although the recovery period may probably be longer. A more precise plan will be known after the next medical examination after returning to Prague. Looking at the spring program of the league season, he will return first for the March derby with Slavia.

The 23-year-old player was the third choice for coach Priske in the fall, behind Angelo Preciad and Pavel Kadeřábek. In the Spartan lineup, he started thirteen matches across all competitions (3+0 record), of which he played from the start of the match in only six cases.

Hosting back in the game?

His situation was supposed to change after the winter break, mainly due to Preciad’s transfer to the Brazilian team Atlético Mineiro. Hradec Králové has been interested in Suchomel for a long time, they wanted to bring him to coach David Horejš’s team on loan. Sparta refused this, because it counted on the fact that it would compete with Kadeřábek in the spring. Veljko Birmančević is also a possibility for the position of right wingback.

Suchomel started the preparation with a very decent performance. In the first preparatory match against the second division Ústí nad Labem (3:0), he completed the first half, in which he scored in the first minute. He beat goalkeeper Tomáš Grigar with a beautiful lob. Later he got into other interesting events.

“Marty scored a beautiful goal, he always does his best, even in training. He’s a tough guy and a Spartan, and you can see that in his performances. When someone gets injured or goes out, it’s up to the others to step up,” said assistant coach Diarmuid O’Carroll.

However, Suchomel’s chance for a bigger playing load fell due to an unpleasant injury, so it is even possible that he will return to the game on loan in Hradec Králové. Sparta has to react to a double loss on the right side.
