Siegemund missed the third round in Melbourne
That was it for the German tennis players in Melbourne. Laura Siegemund is the last representative to be eliminated in the second round, although she has every chance.
Laura Siegemund missed out on making it to the third round at the Australian Open. The 37-year-old lost to Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis 4:6, 7:6 (7:3), 6:7 (7:10) in Melbourne and was the last German player to be eliminated from the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. Previously, Eva Lys, Tatjana Maria and Ella Seidel had all lost in the first round. Siegemund had to admit defeat after 3:20 hours.
From a German perspective, this means that only Alexander Zverev is there in the individual. Last year’s finalist will play against Britain’s Cameron Norrie this Friday (8.30 a.m. CET/Eurosport) for a place in the round of 16.
Difficult conditions in Melbourne
In windy conditions, Siegemund had a very difficult time against the world number 168 from the start. Both players had big problems getting their serves through. Siegemund had to give up her service three times in the first set, and after 59 minutes the Australian won the first round to the cheers of her compatriots.
In the second set, Siegemund pulled away to 5:2, but then made too many simple mistakes. So Inglis found her way back into the game and, from her point of view, even fended off a set point from Siegemund when the score was 4:5. But the Swabian once again showed her great will to fight and took the set after 2:09 hours in the tiebreak.
Siegemund fails because of his own nerves
The momentum was now on their side. Siegemund managed a quick break in the deciding set and served to win the match at 5:4. But then, despite all her experience, the German got nervous, couldn’t get her serve through and was ultimately eliminated completely unnecessarily.
