Salento Baseball Bat Attack: Man Critically Injured

Attacked on the street with a baseball bat, a 44-year-old man, a mechanic, ends up in hospital dying. Violence from “A Clockwork Orange” was recorded last night, Friday 23 January, in via Lepanto in Copertino. The perpetrators were two individuals.

The action was as brutal as it was violent: the mechanic was hit repeatedly in the face and chest with a baseball bat. Part of the wooden rod, broken, was found on the ground. The alarm was raised by his wife and some residents of the area, alerted by screams coming from the street.

When the rescuers arrived, the man was lying on the ground unconscious when the attackers had already disappeared in a car parked a short distance from the scene of the ambush, losing their tracks. 118 personnel intervened on site and, having noted the seriousness of the injuries, took steps to urgently transport the mechanic to the “Vito Fazzi” in Lecce. The man is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit with a reserved prognosis.

Doctors do not comment on the actual health conditions of men. The investigations are entrusted to the carabinieri of the local Tenenza and by colleagues from the Gallipoli Company. The military collected the first testimonies and acquired video surveillance footage to trace the identity of the attackers and clarify the motive for a beating which appears, in its manner and execution, to be anything but random.
