A double victory for French biathletes in this competition, Eric Perot winning – he showed a time of 36 minutes 30.6 seconds at the finish. Emilien Jacqueline finished 41.8 seconds behind his team-mate, while Italy’s Lucas Hofer won bronze, finishing 54.1 seconds behind Perot. All these athletes managed to perfectly overcome the lines of fire.

Birkenthal lost two minutes and 31.9 seconds to the Frenchman at the finish, and was just 1.2 seconds short of eighth place.

It is significant that the Latvian managed to leave behind Tommaso Giacomela, the overall leader of the World Cup by 1.1 seconds, who ranked 10th today with four penalty minutes.

Even after the fourth firing line, Birkenthal was in the eighth position, but the remaining distance to the finish was covered very quickly by the Norwegian Sverre Dahlens Aspenes, who was able to beat 6.5 seconds and overtake the Latvian.

A very unfortunate start this time for the rest of the Latvians – Edgars Mise made a total of seven mistakes, finishing in 85th place, while Aleksandrs Patrijuks was one of the two biathletes who made 10 or more mistakes. This gave him the 95th position at the finish out of 98 competitors who completed the distance.

Andrej Rastorgujev will miss this stage to prepare for the Winter Olympics.

Birkenthal’s first and second shooting

Birkentāls went on the track as the first from the Latvian team with number 7. After showing good skiing speed, unfortunately one mistake was made in the first two shootings, which dropped him out of the circle of the top 30 biathletes.

In the first shooting, 38 biathletes made no mistakes, which left only 50th position to Birkenthal.

Birkenthal’s third shooting

In the individual distance shooting positions are alternated, meaning the third line of fire had to be done prone, something Birkenthal does best this season, and it proved to be the case in this attempt, covering five of the five targets.

Birkenthal’s fourth shooting

The adopted course in both skiing speed and shooting accuracy continued in the last lap as well – the skier managed all five targets in the final firing line, which allowed him to hope for a good place at the finish.

Expectations materialized as a result – Birkenthal stayed in the top five for a long time, but in the end, several biathletes still pushed him to the end of the top ten.

The achieved result will give the Latvian the opportunity to participate in the competition with a joint start on Sunday.

The first and second shooting of Edgar Mises

Edgars Mise went on the track with number 35 and already in the first two firing lines pushed himself away from any hopes of fighting for a recognized place. In the first shooting, he made only one mistake, but in the second, only two of the five targets were closed, which at that moment dropped the athlete to ninth place.

The last shooting of the mass

He added three more faults in the remaining heats, losing seven minutes and 47.5 seconds to the leader at the finish.

Patryuk’s first and second shooting

Patrijuks started today as one of the last – with number 90, and could not find his rhythm in any of the four firing lines. Like his teammates, he made one mistake in the first shootout, while in the second he managed only one of five targets. The last two added the same amount of penalty minutes, finishing 11 minutes and 8.5 seconds behind the winner.

On Friday, the ladies will start in this distance, on Saturday, the mixed pairs and mixed relay are planned, while on Sunday, the ladies and gentlemen will start the distance with a joint start.
