Plaza 12 Pool: Brazo Oriental Summer Fun

Hundreds of people come there every day to enjoy sports activities, including aquatic ones.

With thousands of registered participants, once again the summer activities program takes place in sports plazas throughout the country. On this occasion, Telemundo toured Plaza 12, in Montevideo, to learn about its activities and talk with adults and children.

The plaza is located in the heart of the Brazo Oriental neighborhood, a few blocks from Artigas and San Martín boulevards.

Hundreds of people come there every day to enjoy sports activities. And in summer, with the high temperatures, there is a star that is preferred and chosen by the majority: the outdoor pool, where classes are taught, but there is also space for games.

“This is divine in summer, this pool, with this environment, the trees and the birds, everything divine,” said a woman who, as she explained, is one of the “mermaids” of the square: “We are a group of girls who get together every year, we are always the same, sometimes someone else joins in. We became ‘the mermaids of Plaza 12’, because here we are inescapable.”

The place is public and “all people who wish to do so can enter, whether or not they can pay the fee, since there are scholarships.” It offers sports activities such as gymnastics, futsal, volleyball, children’s handball, functional training, bodybuilding, sports initiation, chess, yoga, yoga for children, taekwon-do, newcom, badminton, calisthenics station and open-air gym. Also cultural and social activities.

But in the summer season the main protagonists are water activities. “I have been coming to the plaza since I was very little, since I was three or four years old. What I like most is the people, there are many friendly people and I have made friends,” said a young man.

A man, for his part, attends with his family, even several times a day: “We come almost daily, more than once, twice a day, swimming continuously and in the family pool. We enjoy it as a family. My young daughters come to learn swimming here.”

Another man said that he started physical activity a few months ago and that it has done him “very, very good,” both “physically and mentally.”

“I have made many friends, you socialize a lot here, and you learn. The classes are powerful,” said a young woman, laughing.

A woman, for her part, added that “the square is spectacular”: “I hope it never closes. There are a few of us who come.”
