[Reported by Li Hehe, compiled by the South American Overseas Chinese News Network]Marlon Torres, co-director of the Nicaraguan Sports Institute (IND), recently stated that the first phase of the “Special Intervention and Infrastructure Plan” construction work has been successfully completed, and a number of large-scale sports venues have been put into use, marking that Nicaragua has made important progress in strengthening sports infrastructure.
The Cuban Latin American News Agency reported on the 5th that Torres said in an interview that a number of key sports facilities have been completed and delivered to use in 2025, including the Miguel “Chocorrón” Buitrago football stadium in the capital Managua, the Matagalpa Sports Complex, and the Vidal Alejandro Alonso in Chinandega. Alonso football stadium, Estelí Independence Stadium, and the first phase of the Stanley Cayasso baseball stadium.
The total investment in the first phase of the “Special Intervention and Infrastructure Plan” amounts to Córdoba 4.7 billion (approximately US$128 million). In addition to the projects mentioned above, there are also the Roberto Clemente Baseball Stadium in Masaya and the Rigoberto López Pérez Baseball Stadium in León.
This year, the Institute of Sports will launch the second phase of construction of the plan, with a total investment expected to be close to Córdoba 6 billion (approximately US$164 million). Among them, funds approximately equivalent to the first phase will be used to build multiple new football stadiums in Jalapa, Somoto, Diriamba and Catarina, and to build baseball stadiums in Bluefields and Bilwi.
In addition, the government unveiled the Fútbol Dignidad National Football Stadium project. The project is expected to have a total investment of US$40 million. Construction is scheduled to officially start in February, with a construction period of approximately 26 months. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028.
Comprehensive calculations show that Nicaragua’s cumulative investment in sports infrastructure construction in the past ten years is approximately US$270 million. Torres commented that the scale of this investment is “historic and unprecedented.”
Torres further pointed out that the new sports facilities will strictly follow international standards and will complement existing sports infrastructure projects. These include the National Stadium (Estadio Nacional Soberanía), Michelle Richardson Swimming Center and Alexis Argüello Sports Complex for the 2017 Central American Games, with a total investment of nearly US$100 million.
At the same time, municipalities are also promoting the construction of a number of smaller sports projects. These projects will double the overall benefits of the Special Interventions and Infrastructure Programme, allowing more communities across the country to benefit from it.
