CRANS MONTANA. An explosion rocked the Swiss Alpine town of Crans-Montana on New Year’s Eve. According to the authorities, around 40 people were killed and around 100 others were injured. Many of the injured suffered severe burns.
The final number of victims is still unclear.
Explosion during New Year’s Eve celebration
According to reports, the tragic accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the “Le Constellation” bar, which is located in the immediate vicinity of several hotels and is particularly popular with tourists. At the time of the explosion, there were more than 100 people in the restaurant celebrating the New Year. As a result of a fire, a massive explosion occurred that partially destroyed the building.
Large-scale deployment of rescue workers
Immediately after the incident, the fire department, police, emergency services and several helicopters responded. Injured people were treated on site and taken to surrounding hospitals, and some were also transferred to other cantons. The region declared a state of emergency to ensure medical care.
