Nashville Shooting: College Basketball Player Killed

A Tennessee basketball player was shot and killed while in a vehicle on a Nashville highway, police said Monday.

Andre Bell, 20, was a sophomore at Fisk University from Jackson, Tennessee. He died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Bell was returning to campus with two friends on Interstate 65 after attending a gymnastics event. According to police, while the trio was traveling in Bell’s Nissan Sentra, the friends saw a black sedan in the left lane next to them.

Andre Bell, 20, a basketball player at Fisk University, was fatally shot in the head while returning to campus, police said.

“Both said they were distracted by their cell phones when they suddenly heard several gunshots and realized Bell had been hit,” a police news release states.

The Sentra slowed and turned back into traffic before crashing into a red pickup truck, according to police. The dark sedan continued on its way.

Bell was shot in the head and taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died.

Investigators said evidence suggests the car from which the shots were fired likely had windshield damage, based on broken glass found at the scene.

In a statement, Fisk University said it was saddened by the tragic loss of Bell, a business administration student.

The head coach of the Fisk men’s basketball team, Jeremiah Crutcher, described Bell as a “kind young man” who was “unjustly torn from this world.”

“He was a dominant figure on the Fisk University men’s basketball team, but he is remembered most for his infectious smile, his loving personality and his unique ability to always fill any room with warmth,” he said. «We now feel a great absence in our program, but, more importantly, we feel a deep pain in our hearts. We will miss him very much. “Our thoughts and unconditional prayers are with his family and with the young children in his family and in Nashville who looked up to him.”
