Matías Grande: No Medal at World Archery Championship – La Jornada

Mexico City. The Mexican Matías Grande failed to advance to the medal fight at the World Archery Championships held in Gwangju, South Korea, after falling in the quarterfinals of the men’s recurve tournament against the Spanish Andrés Temiño.

Despite having an excellent performance in the previous rounds, the tricolor goalkeeper, one of Mexico’s strong cards for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, was unable to advance to the semifinals this Thursday after losing 4-6 to the Iberian, who ultimately took the gold medal after beating Brazilian Marco D’Almeida 6-5 in the final.

The native of Celaya, Guanajuato, who just last July won the gold medal in the Archery World Cup held in Madrid, had surprised in the round of 16 after beating local Lee Woo Seok 6-2.

In the qualifying stage, Grande, 21 years old and who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, placed 23rd, and in the first rounds defeated Nguyen Minh, from Vietnam, 7-3, Tom Hall, from England, 6-2, and Federico Musolesi, from Italy, 7-3.

In the recurve bow modality, the tricolor delegation has not had good results in the current World Cup, since the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the mixed team, were eliminated and were left without the possibility of medals.

The competition will continue this Friday with the women’s individual recurve bow qualifiers, a modality in which the Mexican Alejandra Valencia, double Olympic medalist, will begin her participation in the fourth round in search of reaching the final.
