No unnecessary headaches for Arsenal. The Premier League leader fell behind after just three minutes in their FA Cup match against Portsmouth, but an unleashed Gabriel Martinelli then turned things around. With a hat-trick he still gave Arsenal a relatively simple victory.
As well as the match would ultimately end, the FA Cup match started so dramatically for Arsenal.
The Premier League leader started his cup match against Portsmouth with the right intentions, but received a cold shower after just three minutes. Colby Bishop was good for the rebound and surprisingly gave the home team the lead.
Portsmouth was not allowed to enjoy this for long. After a corner kick, Andre Dozzel unfortunately worked the ball into his own goal and everything had to be done again. Arsenal then took over the initiative and pushed the Championship club further and further back.
The deserved lead followed halfway through the first half. Martinelli headed in a cross well and put the logic of the game on the scoreboard. Shortly afterwards, Arsenal failed to put the match into a decisive fold: Noni Madueke nonchalantly kicked a penalty wide.
After halftime the game pattern remained the same. Portsmouth tried hard to hold on, but Arsenal’s quality was ultimately decisive.
Martinelli made it 1-3 early in the second half after a good combination and then also scored the fourth goal with a striking header.
With a hat-trick from Martinelli and despite a brief shock reaction in the beginning, Arsenal gets its FA Cup campaign on track without any detours.
