Markström Cut From Olympic Team: Finland Snub & “Flop” Reaction

Who will be Tre Kronor’s first goalkeeper at the Olympics?

Not Jacob Markström, if you ask the Finnish experts.

“The Swedish superstar has collapsed in a shocking way“, writes Ilta-Sanomat.

Jacob Markström, 36, is one of three goalkeepers in Tre Kronor’s Olympic squad.

He has stiff competition from Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt.

In Finland, you are at least sure who should not be the first spade.

In the magazine Ilta-Sanomat’s NHL analysis, Jacob Markström is completely cut. The headline is not kind to the Swedish New Jersey Devils star:

“The Swedish superstar has collapsed in a shocking way – the team’s entire season is ruined.”

And the fact is that the Finnish newspaper managed to publish the sawing on Markström’s very birthday. He turns 36 on Saturday.

Hanging out on the birthday: “The biggest flop”

In the analysis itself, the criticism then continues:

“The New Jersey Devils’ season has been a complete disaster. The team has many players who have performed below expectations, but the biggest flop has been Swedish goaltender Jacob Markström. He has been one of the worst goaltenders of the entire NHL season, measured by both traditional and advanced statistical measures.”

The New Jersey Devils are in sixth place, third last, in their division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference.

Earlier in his career, Jacob Markström won a WC gold and two WC bronze with Sweden.

Tre Kronor begins the Olympic group stage against Italy on February 11.
