Brighton & Hove Albion beat Manchester United 2-1 away in the third round of the FA Cup and eliminated them from the oldest club tournament in the world, dealing them a new blow in a season that has been disappointing for the Old Trafford team. Since 2014 I have not been left out of the contest so early.
The German Brajan Gruda opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the visiting team, after a clearance on the line by the Argentine Lisandro Martínez after a header from the Frenchman Georginio Rutter. At that point, the home team deserved better luck.
Danny Welbeck increased the difference in the 64th minute, when he received a pass from Gruda in the crescent, entered the area and beat Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens with a powerful left foot shot that went into the corner.
Manuel Ugarte played the first 79 minutes for Manchester United, who reduced the difference in the 85th minute thanks to a header from the Slovenian Benjamin Sesko and four minutes later he suffered the expulsion of Shea Lacey.
Earlier, Arsenal did not struggle to beat Portsmouth 4-1 on their visit to Portsmouth, which is fighting to remain in the Championship (second category), even though they started losing at 3′ due to a goal from Colby Bishop.
An own goal by Andre Dozzell equalized the score at 8′ in a set-piece action, and the other three goals were from Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli, who turned the score around at 25′ and increased the difference at 51′ and 72′.
