LONGBROEK – Last Friday, the 19th team took place in the SVL sports halle time the Christmas tournament takes place for people over 65 who play sports every week in Langbroek and Wijk bij Duurstede. A total of 44 participants competed against each other in badminton, tennis, basketball, shuffleboard and darts. The no longer so young athletes unanimously say that participating is more fun than winning. “That is a bonus, but it is not the most important thing,” they comment.
Ries van de Bildt has been participating from the start. “It’s fun to do and good for your health,” he says. “I don’t have a specific preference for a particular sport. It’s wonderful to vary. And Teunie, our exercise coach, keeps everything on track with a sense of humor.” Marianne, another participant, says she retired eight years ago. “You then end up in a completely different rhythm of life,” she notes. “And you have to stay a bit active and not fall asleep, I personally think. And the nice thing is that you also continue to mingle with people. Sports is not only good for your fitness, but also includes a social aspect. André van de Meer has lived in Wijk bij Duurstede since 2017. “I play sports there in another group, also led by Teunie, but I participate in the tournament in Langbroek every year. That is always a lot of fun.” When the winners of the relevant components are announced afterwards, there is applause and congratulations. Then it’s time for a drink and a nice get-together with a cheerful chat.
