Liverpool have cautiously sounded out Xabi Alonso as manager for the club, it is understood AS Diary to report. The club maintains warm contacts with the Spanish manager’s entourage.
Arne Slot is having a difficult season with Liverpool. The Dutch manager won the title of England champion with The Reds last season, but is now fourth in the Premier League.
Manchester United, Chelsea and even Brentford could surpass that on Sunday, putting Liverpool seventh in the rankings.
Bearing in mind that the club spent almost five hundred million euros on new players this summer, it is not surprising that Slot’s position is under discussion.
Alonso is said to have already called Liverpool management. The contact is good. The Reds have asked the former player of the club if he would like to join after this season. Slot has received a guarantee from the board that he will be allowed to complete the season.
Alonso turned down offers from Liverpool in the summer of 2024 because he wanted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season. Then he also turned down interest from Bayern Munich.
He ultimately opted for a contract with Real Madrid last summer, but that club fired him earlier this month after some disappointing results and disagreements with a number of players.
