The Lakers’ season has become significantly complicated in recent weeks, to the point of reviving debates around an urgent adjustment of the squad. Between injuries, persistent rumors around LeBron James and an overly shaky defense, the Los Angeles franchise is looking for concrete solutions to stay in the race for the playoffs.
The defensive difficulties have become one of the team’s main weaknesses. Too often overwhelmed on the outside lines, the Lakers struggle to contain the opposing backs and wingers, which unbalances the entire collective project. In this context, the recruitment of a defensive specialist appears to be a strategic priority.
Among the targeted profiles, that of Herb Jones stands out insistently. The Pelicans winger has established himself as one of the league’s most reliable defenders on the perimeter, capable of multiplying difficult assignments without disrupting the rest of the team. His offensive contribution remains limited, but his impact without the ball corresponds precisely to Los Angeles’ current needs.
A three-team setup to get around obstacles
The main obstacle in this matter remains the price demanded by New Orleans. The Pelicans are asking for several first-round picks to consider leaving Jones, a request deemed excessive by California leaders. To get around this constraint, a three-team scenario including Brooklyn was imagined in order to distribute costs and assets.
In this hypothesis, the Lakers would recover Herb Jones, while the Pelicans would receive a 2027 first round pick from the Nets, a 2031 first round pick from the Lakers as well as young Noah Clowney. Brooklyn, for its part, would absorb Rui Hachimura’s contract and obtain a 2032 second-round pick.
For Los Angeles, the interest is obvious. Herb Jones would immediately bring significant defensive value, particularly on the outside positions, with valuable versatility to accompany a creative star like Luka Dončić. Giving up a new first-round pick represents a risk, but it is also the price to pay to hope to reach a competitive milestone.
Brooklyn would play a facilitating role. With a comfortable salary margin, the New York franchise can afford to absorb an expiring contract while sacrificing a draft choice. A coherent operation for a team more focused on asset management than on immediate ambition. This scenario remains hypothetical, but it illustrates the pressure that now surrounds the Lakers.
