Kimono & Tatami: Childhood in Bernaville

“This is his second year of judo and she loves it. The rules are nice and it allows me to channel my daughter who is very energetic. I think she will stay there for a while and she will certainly be joined by her two sisters Clémence and Agathe,” says the mother of 5-year-old Alice who lives in Bernaville (Somme).

17 children aged 4 to 5 years old

She is one of 17 young people aged 4 to 5 years old to attend the baby section of the Bernaville judo club.

A section created in 2014 with Florine Prouvost, sports instructor. “It’s not too early to practice judo,” say many parents attending training.

During this course, the child learns to manage contact with other children and to fall without getting hurt. He is already discovering the basic technical words that he uses throughout his practice of this combat sport.

The boys and girls meet once a week for an hour on the tatami mats installed in the communal sports premises of the Usine, route de Fienvillers.

During this hour, toddlers learn to use their motor skills, learn to manage their fear of falls and, little by little, contact with other children in the group. The sports instructor also introduces them, in the form of games, to friendship, courage, sincerity, honor, modesty, respect, self-control and politeness.

Judo, a sport for all children

This sport is recommended for all children, boys and girls. Their personalities can also be brought to evolve on the carpet.

“Little ones who are very shy at first can become much more open by being around new friends, during complex motor exercises to be carried out in pairs. Other toddlers, who are rather restless, can, for their part, become more gentle and attentive to the rules necessary to accomplish a required figure.”

“Out of seventeen children enrolled in 2025-2026; half should stay at the club like Alice because in Bernaville, we can also play football and many of the club’s 64 members are registered in three clubs,” indicates Évelyne Bacquet, club secretary.
