Sad news from the Visma-Lease a Bike camp. The Dutch team confirms that leader Jonas Vingegaard fell during training on Monday. A cowboy story was already circulating on Strava, but the team is now sharing its version of the facts. “Please let riders train and give them as much space and rest as possible,” it said.
The news of Vingegaard’s crash was already making the rounds on Strava on Monday evening.
The reason: a message from amateur cyclist Pedro Garcia Fernandez. “Jonas fell while trying to shake me off on a descent. I stopped to ask how he was doing, but he was angry that I had chased him,” he wrote.
Several eyewitnesses also shared their stories in the comments. The Dane would not have been thrilled with the cycling tourists in his wake and therefore things would have gone wrong.
To avoid further rumors or alternative stories, his team responded officially the morning after the facts. For example, Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed the crash of their leader, without going into further details.
“Jonas Vingegaard fell during training on Monday,” his team wrote. “Luckily he is OK and did not suffer any serious injuries.”
Visma-Lease a Bike then also addresses the fans. “As a team, we would like to encourage cycling fans in general to always put safety first. For both your own well-being and that of others, please let riders train and give them as much space and rest as possible.”
