Horseback Archery: Tokyo Shrine Tradition

Children riding wooden horses demonstrated their archery skills at a Shinto shrine in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Rokugo Shrine holds this event every year on January 7, to pray for the health and good fortune of children.

Around 60 young people dressed as samurai warriors, including students from local primary schools and kindergartens, took part this year.

The young warriors aimed their arrows at the demon’s eye, depicted on the target.

The victorious archers were greeted with loud cheers and applause.

“It was fun!” “, declared a 7-year-old boy who managed to hit the target. He added that he would work well at school in 2026.

The mother of a 4-year-old participant said he looked good, hoping he would have a healthy year.
