MANCHESTER – Michael Carrick has officially become the interim coach of Manchester United football players.

The English club will lead until the end of the season. The former “Red Devils” midfielder was already in the position of temporary coach in the 2021/22 season, when he led the team from Old Trafford in three duels after the dismissal of Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Carrick has already completed one full-time role as chief helmsman. He sat on the bench of the second division FC Middlesbrough for the first time in October 2022 and ended in June 2025. United also negotiated the return of Solskjaer. “Leading Manchester United is a great honor for me,” 44-year-old Carrick, who will make his debut on Saturday against city rivals Manchester City, told the British media.

The Portuguese Ruben Amorim ended up on the bench after 14 months, he was temporarily replaced by the Scotsman Darren Fletcher. He led the team in a 2:2 league draw with FC Burnley, and during his presence ManUtd were eliminated from the FA Cup after losing to Brighton (1:2).

Relegation from both domestic cup competitions and an absence from the European Cup means ManUtd will play just 40 games this season, the lowest since 1914/15.
