Hasi’s Sclessin Curse: Anderlecht’s Losing Streak

As T1 of what was still the great Anderlecht, his record was even more dramatic, with four defeats out of four: 1-0, 2-0, 3-1 and 1-0 in 2014 and 2015. Standard was the club that inflicted his first defeat as a coach (1-0 at the start of the playoffs in 2014). Youri Tielemans is the only one to have scored for Hasi in Sclessin, in the 2015 playoffs, but the scorer was already 3-0. His only victory he obtained in 2010 as T2 from Ariël Jacobs (0-4). Standard has always been Hasi’s pet peeve.

Twice 0-0 with Mechelen

After returning from Saudi Arabia, Hasi achieved two clean draws at Standard with Mechelen. Last season, Anderlecht won in Liège without its supporters (0-2, goals from Hazard and Angulo), but Hasi was not yet back at Sporting. David Hubert was still in charge of the team. After the next two matches (2-0 at Westerlo and 3-0 against Cercle Bruges), he was shown the door. Given that Standard did not qualify for playoffs 1, this will be Hasi’s first match at Sclessin with Anderlecht since November 8, 2015 (1-0), more than ten years ago.

Rutten and Mazzù: stoppage of the match and C4

Two of his recent predecessors know what it means to lose at Standard. The Dutchman Fred Rutten was sacked after the shameful match in Sclessin. Supporters of a helpless Anderlecht, reduced to ten after the exclusion of Kara, ended the match at 2-0 after half an hour of play by throwing smoke bombs onto the pitch. Anderlecht lost by a forfeited score (5-0) and Karim Belhocine finished the season.

Again in 2022, when Felice Mazzù did not survive the defeat at Standard. This time, the Anderlecht “fans” waited until the 3-1 in the 56th minute to throw their firecrackers and sparklers on the field. Back at the Martin’s Red hotel in Tubize, the location of the green, Mazzù had to spend the night there to avoid confrontation with the furious fans who had gone there. The next morning, Vandenhaute fired Mazzù in the same hotel, the goalkeeper coach Boeckx had to go to Neerpede to give training.

Ivic fired after 1-4

Two other former coaches were fired after a match against Standard, but it was not a match at Sclessin. In front of 38,000 spectators, Croatian Tomislav Ivic lost 1-4 at home against Goethals’ Standard in September 1982. Paul Van Himst was his successor.

And Corsican Pierre Sinibaldi, who won four titles with Anderlecht, was kicked out after the 1966 Cup final, lost against Standard (1-0, goal by Dewalque). But the decision had already been made earlier: even if Sinibaldi won almost everything in Belgium, the management criticized him for playing too naively in the European Cup.
