Handball Trophy Theft: Silver Ingot Remains After Melt Down?

The silver trophy awarded to Füchse Berlin for their 2025 German handball championship title, the first in the club’s history, was melted after its theft in November, its director said on Thursday after the announcement of two arrests by the police. “We learned today that the cup was found, but it was melted. There is only one bar of silver left,” club director Bob Hanning said in a statement.

Berlin police announced in a separate statement the arrest of two men aged 41 and 62 on Tuesday. It carried out several searches in three districts of Berlin and the neighboring region of Brandenburg.

The trophy not found during the searches

During these operations, it seized “gold worth at least 100,000 euros, 15,000 euros in cash, a melted sterling silver ingot, a melting furnace and other evidence, representing the volume of a truck load”.

In its press release, the police do not say whether the melted ingot found is indeed the one mentioned by Mr. Hanning. The oldest suspect was taken into custody and then released, the youngest was placed in pre-trial detention. The board, which symbolized the very first national title of the Berlin “Foxes”, was stolen in November from the club’s premises, five months after being acquired on the pitch.
