National player Leon Goretzka will be FC Bayern Leaving Munich – but not until the end of the season. “As much as I am honored by the interest from top international clubs, I have clearly decided that I want to stay at FC Bayern until the end of the season,” the 30-year-old announced on Instagram.
Goretzka wrote that he feels committed to the team, “who are incredibly fun to work with on and off the pitch” and to coach Vincent Kompany, who has “formed the team into a real unit again”. “At the same time, the club and I have decided in good and constructive discussions that our successful time together will come to an end in the summer.” This is the right moment for him to start a new chapter – “as a footballer and as a person”.
The club also announced that Goretzka would stay until the end of the season, when his contract would expire. Kompany said that he was “looking forward to the moments” with Goretzka “that we can still enjoy together.”
Goretzka had recently flirted with a move abroad, and several media outlets expected him to say goodbye this winter. “I find it exciting to go abroad in my career,” he said in an interview with ZEIT this week, but had already indicated that he wanted to stay in Munich until the end of the season: “Getting to know something new would also enrich my life.”
Atlético Madrid and AC Milan are said to be interested
Atlético Madrid had made an offer to Bayern for the midfielder. The Spaniards are said to have offered up to five million euros for a winter move and were prepared to take on Goretzka’s salary until the end of the season. The Spanish club, like AC Milan, is now considered interested in a summer transfer.
Goretzka moved from Schalke 04 to Munich in 2018. He has played 292 competitive games for Bayern so far, in which he scored 47 goals and prepared 48 goals.
