Goalkeeper Cardiac Arrest: First National Impact

Argentine football is going through hours of concern after learning of a serious episode that occurred at Deportivo Madryn. Mauricio Nievas, one of the goalkeepers on the professional team, suffered cardiorespiratory arrest during a preseason practice and had to be urgently assisted by the institution’s medical staff.

According to the club in a statement, the incident occurred during morning training. “The goalkeeper Mauricio Nievas suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, immediately assisted by medical personnel from the institution. Within our premises and with the use of the defibrillator, the player regained consciousness and was transferred to the intensive care unit of the city Hospital,” they detailed.

The quick action of the medical team, which performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and used an automatic external defibrillator (AED), was decisive in ensuring that the footballer could be stabilized before being transferred to the health center.

Nievas is 27 years old, is a native of Córdoba and arrived at Deportivo Madryn in 2019. He was one of the important pieces of the team that achieved promotion to the Primera Nacional in 2021. In recent seasons he had lost continuity and during 2025 he defended Germinal’s goal in the Federal A Tournament. This summer he had returned to the club and had begun the preseason under the orders of coach Cristian Díaz.

As TyC points out, according to the first clinical studies, reported by doctor Gustavo Acuña to Jornada, no initial anomalies were detected, although the goalkeeper remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Andrés Isola Hospital, under strict observation and with a reserved prognosis.
