Gērmane: Latvia’s Alpine Skiing Record

Latvian alpine skier Jenifera Gērmane took seventh place in slalom at the World Cup stage in Slovenia on Sunday, reaching the highest result in the history of independent Latvian alpine skiing.

In the first race, Đermane showed the tenth best time, which gave her the start from the tenth position in the second race. In the second track, the Latvian showed a very stable performance and took first place after the previously competing athletes. Only six competitors beat her in the sum of both trips.

The victory in the competition was won by Swiss athlete Kamilla Rasta, who was the fastest in both races and finished in one minute and 40.2 seconds. Second place was lost by 0.14 seconds to the American Mikaela Shiffrin, while the third place was taken by another athlete from Switzerland, Wendy Holdener, who was 1.83 seconds behind the winner.

Đermane achieved a shared fourth best time in the second race, but was 2.56 seconds behind the winner in the overall standings. The seventh place she won has become a new Latvian record in the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Latvian athletes achieved a higher result only during the USSR, when

Gërmane’s mother, Ulla Lodziņa, won fourth place in one competition.

Another athlete from Latvia, Liene Bondarei, had her race ended in the first run, where she did not finish due to a mistake made at the top of the track.

After six stages of the World Cup slalom, Shifrina is the leader in the overall standings of the discipline with 580 points, Rasta is in second place with 362 points, and Gërmane shares the tenth place with 116 points. In the overall ranking of all disciplines, Shifrina takes the first place, Rasta takes the second place, while Đermane is in the 31st position.

This season, Germane returned to the World Cup after almost a year’s break. At her first start in Finland, she took 21st place, in the next competition she rose to 14th position, but in subsequent stages she entered the top ten several times. In the previous season, the Latvian was eighth in slalom three times, but took 14th place in the final stage, while at the beginning of 2024, she became the world junior champion in slalom.
