In Nazi Germany, books were ceremoniously burned in the 1930s. Jewish books and communist and liberal writings were banned. In American schools today, books are like 1984 van Orwell, A Handmaid’s Tale by Atwood, and in some states even banned versions of Anne Frank’s diary. Hitler wanted to ban ‘un-German ideas’ from universities, Trump intimidates universities in his fight against ‘left-wing radical indoctrination’ and diversity. Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t play football!

In 1936, the German Wehrmacht marched into the Rhineland, violating the Treaty of Versailles. That same year, Hitler sent military units to Spain to aid Franco’s nationalists. This year (so far) US Marines kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the US is threatening attacks in Mexico and military deployment in Greenland has not been ruled out. In any case, we will play our first match against Japan in Dallas on June 14.

In America they call a raid in 2026 a raid, people say severely abused in immigrant detention centersand become alleged criminals without trial transferred to the infamous CECOT prison in El Salvador. Becoming undocumented migrants deported to countries such as South Sudaneven though they have never been there. This week, 37-year-old Renee Good, a mother of three, was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. Because of the time difference, pub owners hope that they can stay open longer during the World Cup.

From 1936 onwards, the actions of the Gestapo were by law above any form of judicial control; their actions could no longer be reviewed by administrative courts. That same year, Heinrich Himmler began modernizing the concentration camp system that had already existed for a few years (the extermination camps would come later). During the 1936 Olympic Games, prisoners built the Sachsenhausen concentration camp not far from Berlin.

Dutch swimmer Rie Mastenbroek won no fewer than three gold medals during the Games, becoming the ‘Empress of Berlin’. The Netherlands won a total of 17 medals and finished 9th in the medal rankings. With a bit of luck, the Dutch team will finally win the world title this year and the captain of the Dutch national team will receive the World Cup from Donald Trump on July 19 in New Jersey.
