The veils fall from the new one Ferrari SF-26the seventy-second Formula 1 car of the Scuderia Ferrariis Maranello’s response to the most radical regulatory change in recent years. The baptism, as per tradition, took place on the Fiorano circuit, in front of an audience packed along the track despite the cold.

The car was born within a regulatory framework that calls for the ground effect era to be archived and the way in which the car generates load to be rewritten. No more exaggerated funds, but a rethought aerodynamic packagewith cleaner volumes, less exaggerated surfaces and the obsessive goal of removing every ounce possible. In parallel, under the hood the new generation of power units: the MGU-H disappears, the specific weight of the electric increases with an MGU-K brought up to 350 kW, and in fact the hybrid stops being a “support” to become a co-protagonist. The result it is a machine born from a blank sheet of paper: revised architecture, even closer integration between chassis and power unit and a package designed to accompany the Scuderia throughout the first cycle of this new Formula 1.

The livery celebrates the 312T

If technology looks ahead, the livery acts as a bridge between past and future. The most obvious innovation is the return to glossy paint after seven seasons of matte finish: a choice that is not only nostalgic, but also image-enhancing. Ferrari Red is brighter and recalls the special colorway seen at Monza in 2025, a nod to an era of success and dominance.

Next to the red, white stops being a simple detail to become a co-protagonist. It can be found in the passenger compartment area and on the bonnet, in solid blocks that create a clear but balanced contrast. Overall, red and white build a coherent visual language: the car is immediately recognizable as a Ferrari, but it doesn’t look like a simple restyling from the recent past. It’s a livery that brings orderrather than adding layers: less “graphics”, more identity.

Lighter lines, clearer ideas

Visually the SF-26 seems to want to translate the Anglo-Saxon mantra “less is more” into shapes. The proportions are more compact and streamlinedwith a bodywork that gives up some muscle to gain in cleanliness. The SF-26 has a cleaner and more rationalized line, a choice that is not only aesthetic, but serves to create a robust, understandable and above all developable aerodynamic platform throughout the championship, as track data begins to arrive.

It is a car that, at least on paper, was born without visual tricks and without extreme theatrical touches: a camera body that seems to favor coherence and functional simplicity. In a completely new regulation, where everyone is groping in a gray area of simulations and assumptions, Maranello chooses the path of method: first understand how the SF-26 breathes, then push on developments.

From CAD to asphalt: the truth phase begins

With the presentation the quietest part of the work ends and another, much noisier part opens, in which the stopwatch will do the talking. Over 15 kilometers of today’s shakedown, the SF-26 will go on track next week in Barcelonaon the occasion of the collective shakedown that Formula 1 has planned as the first test bed for the new single-seaters. Two test sessions will follow in Bahrain, where – amidst heat, wind and abrasive asphalt – the real comparison of the technical concepts put in place by the various teams will begin.

For Ferrari it will be a delicate phase: new regulations mean steep learning curves and large margins of profit (or error) in the first few weeks. From Maranello, however, the message is clear: methodical approach, obsessive attention to detail and data analysis as the only compass for controlled and solid progression throughout the season. No proclamations this yearunlike last season, but the awareness that whoever understands first how to exploit the new balance between “cleaned up” aerodynamics and an enhanced hybrid power unit will gain an advantage that could last for years.

Loic Serra and the blank sheet

Il chassis technical director returns several times to one point: before even designing, it was necessary to fully understand what type of Formula 1 would be that of 2026. “The development of the SF-26 project required us to adapt to a completely new regulatory framework. We dedicated a lot of time to the conceptual phase to incorporate the new regulatory and technical context as much as possible. At the same time, it was essential to ensure that the architecture of the car offered us sufficient flexibility for development over the course of the season. In this scenario, efficiency and the integration of solutions such as active aerodynamics are key elements. The SF-26 represents a great collective effort from the whole team at the factory and we can’t wait to start the season.”

Gualtieri: the power unit as part of the chassis

On the power unit front, the language is even clearer. Enrico Gualtieri doesn’t talk about “step” or “update”, but about change of philosophy. The elimination of the MGU-H, the massive increase in the electrical contribution and the arrival of 99% sustainable fuel force us to rethink the engine no longer as a block in itself, to be inserted into the body, but as an organic part of the vehicle concept.

“The significant increase in the role of the electric component, the introduction of 99% sustainable fuel and the elimination of the MGU-H represent a clear change in philosophy, not a simple evolution like the one we experienced from 2014 to 2025. This required us to rethink the architecture of the powertrain from the early stages, working on efficiency, integration and energy management, increasingly in close collaboration with colleagues on the Chassis team. It is a complex technical challenge, which we have faced with great respect, discipline and with the aim of optimizing the entire car system over the course of the season.”
