Fernando Mamede Death: Former Athlete Dies at 74 – Observer

Former Sporting athlete and one of the biggest names in sport and national athletics Fernando Mamede died, this Tuesday, at the age of 74. According to the newspaper A BolaMamede died due to heart problems.

Specialist in long-distance races, he was a bronze medalist at the World Cross-Cross Championships in 1981, a European and world record holder (he maintained the best time in the world in the 10,000 meters between 1984 and 1999) and 27 national records, from 1,000 meters to the mile. He participated in three Olympic Games (Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984).

He joined Sporting in 1968, led by Moniz Pereira, with whom he won 20 national track titles. In cross-country, he was a six-time individual national champion and helped the Alvalade club win nine European Cups. Furthermore, and in collective terms, he was part of the teams that won 16 national cross championships and 14 national athletics championships.

The President of the Republic also lamented the death of the Alentejo runner and sent his “heartfelt condolences” to Sporting CP, the Portuguese Athletics Federation and his friends and family. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa described Fernando Mamede as a “remarkable and unavoidable figure in athletics and national sport”. The head of state also recalled that the athlete was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Merit in 1989.

The Portuguese Athletics Federation (FPA) highlighted the “legacy” left by Fernando Mamede, highlighting the career of “excellence” and the “dedication” of a “unique figure” who died today, aged 74.

“It is with deep regret that we inform and mourn the passing of Fernando Mamede, a unique figure whose career was marked by excellence and dedication, which led him to break a 10,000m world record, three European and two dozen national records. His remarkable journey constitutes a legacy that will remain as a reference and inspiration”, transmitted the organization led by Domingos Castro.

For its part, the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) praised, through social media, “one of the biggest names in national athletics, who was present in three editions of the Olympic Games”, while the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) lamented the death of “an outstanding athlete”.

“The death of Fernando Mamede represents a huge loss for all of Portuguese sport. An outstanding athlete, he was one of the greatest figures ever in world athletics and a reference for all fans of the sport”, reads a message from the president of the FPF, Pedro Proença, published on the entity’s official website.
