Returning to school for three words of concern
After working as a temporary teacher at Heping Primary School for four years, in 2013, Feng Wenjie successfully passed the examination and moved to Changsha County, winning the enviable “iron rice bowl”. Two years later, he made a decision that puzzled everyone – to resign and re-enter Heping Elementary School. When faced with doubts, he only gave a three-word answer – “I can’t let go.”
In these three simple words, there is hidden the little figure running on the cement floor, the children’s purest love for basketball, and an educator’s persistence in his original intention.
Make basketball a “compulsory course” for the whole school
Feng Wenjie returned to school with the tenacity to “bring basketball into every child’s life” and relied on the sports people platform built by the school to deeply ingrain the concept of “full participation” into the campus.
He took the lead in improving the “class league system”, which broke the limitations of “competition for a few people” and gave every child the opportunity to perform on the field. The “Basketball Culture Week” created by the school around this event deeply integrates painting, writing, music and sports, allowing basketball to jump out of the court and grow artistic branches.
Feng Wenjie, Liu Junkun, Wu Di and other key physical education teachers formed a think tank to compile school-based curriculum resource packages, build a “three-level echelon”, and launch a “star player” evaluation system, turning physical education from a single “physical education class” to a matter in which the whole school participates. Since then, the sports field is no longer the “exclusive responsibility field” of the physical education group, but has become an educational space jointly operated by all teachers and students on campus.
More than 300 days and nights of warm companionship
In Feng Wenjie’s dictionary of “sports education”, “warmth” is the most important footnote.
Peng Aobo, a member of the Heping Primary School basketball team, has his parents away from home all year round. After every training session, he always sits alone on the edge of the court in a daze. Feng Wenjie saw it in his eyes and said “I will send you off later”, which became an agreement rain or shine.
Winter comes and summer comes, Feng Wenjie’s car waits at the school gate on time, and the cross-city road turns into a mobile classroom: analyzing tactics in rainy days, discussing cooperation in sunny days, and listening to children’s worries about study and life in the twilight…
For more than three hundred days and nights a year, the wheels run over not only the distance, but also the silent companionship of “You are not alone.” This warmth quietly penetrates the heart of every child.
Working hand in hand to cultivate the soil of “national brand”
This love and responsibility are the most fertile nutrients for the continuous growth of the Heping Primary School sports team: from a few people at the beginning to a professional team of 16 people, and the establishment of the “Famous Basketball Coach Studio of Feng Wenjie Primary School in Yuhua District”; from obscurity to winning the provincial first prize for teaching and research results, and being rated as the municipal “Outstanding Teaching and Research Team”… All Heping people have turned their love into a career.
At the same time, the campus environment is also quietly upgrading. The once pitted cement floor has been transformed into 14 standardized training fields and a standard basketball hall; “everyone has a ball, every class has a team, and there are games every week” has become the norm on campus. Class leagues have been held for 15 consecutive years, the lively “Dad Basketball Team”, and enjoyable parent-child sports games…
Basketball is no longer just a sport, but a warm link connecting home, school and society.
Sports education illuminates the road to growth
The result is written on the answer sheet of time. Heping Primary School was awarded the title of “National Basketball Characteristic School” and “Excellent Base School for Youth Competitive Sports Talents in the City”; it has won district, city, provincial, and national-level competitions and won Grand Slams in the past three years; player Ma Zihan was selected for the National Youth Team and won the world championship; nearly 110 basketball teenagers were promoted to high-quality middle schools…
But in Feng Wenjie’s heart, what is more precious than medals is the smiling faces of every child when they run. He smiled and said: “The end of physical education is not on the playing field, but in the growth of every child.”
“Teacher Feng’s practice provides a vivid grassroots example of the ‘integration of sports and education’.” Duan Peng, secretary and principal of Heping Primary School, said with emotion, “The essence of sports is to educate people. We should make sports the light in every child’s life, illuminating the path to physical and mental health and the path to personality development.”
