  • A ticket cost 20,000 Australian dollars.

  • Federer returns to Melbourne for an exhibition match.

This Sunday tennis finally starts again on the big stage. The Australian Open starts and with Stan Wawrinka, Belinda Bencic, Viktorija Golubic and Simona Waltert, four Swiss cracks are in the main table of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer will have a big appearance at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Saturday evening (local time). The 44-year-old tennis legend will play an exhibition match together with US icon Andre Agassi and the two Australian veteran stars Patrick Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt as part of the tournament’s first-ever opening ceremony.

Australian Open: Meet & Greet mit Federer

For the organizers, Federer’s return to the place where the Swiss triumphed six times (most recently in 2018) is a big deal. “I can hardly wait to see Roger back in the Rod Laver Arena with other greats of the sport,” tournament director Craig Tiley was quoted as saying.

From a commercial point of view, Federer’s appearance is also being exploited down under. Some tickets for the opening party were available for 20,000 Australian dollars. The equivalent of over 10,700 Swiss francs not only includes a premium seat in the stadium, champagne à gogo and a fine dinner, but also a meet & greet with Federer in the players’ dressing room at the Rod Laver Arena.

Tickets completely sold out

As Tennis Australia confirmed to 20 Minutes, the tickets with the opportunity to meet the maestro are already completely sold out. “There are currently no further opportunities to meet Roger Federer, but keep an eye on our website,” the tournament organizer said.

The Basel native himself is looking forward to returning to Melbourne. “I can’t wait to come back to the Australian Open and create more fantastic moments with the ‘Aussie fans’,” said Federer when he announced his presence in Australia at the end of last year.
