The third division football team did well against the Bundesliga team. In the end, despite a decent performance, there was a defeat. The “Freie Presse” provides the stories about the game.
Ouch.
FC Erzgebirge Aue lost its XXL test match against Bundesliga soccer club Union Berlin 1:2 (0:2). Head coach Jens Härtel’s team showed a committed performance and were rewarded in the final phase for a decent performance and the creation of numerous chances. Young player Quentin Fraulob scored the goal by putting his toe into a shot from Maximilian Schmid (109′) and pushing the ball over the line. On the other hand, the Köpenickers were successful in the first round of the 120 minutes of play. Aljoscha Kemlein (10th) and Scotland’s national striker Oliver Burke (54th) put the capital club on the winning track early on. The “Freie Presse” provides the stories about the game.
Hard-working helpers: After wintry days and snowfall in the Erzgebirge, it took a lot of effort and mobilization of strength to even be able to carry out the test against the Bundesliga club. On Monday morning, FC Erzgebirge asked for the fans’ help to clear the snow from the lawn and the paths around the Erzgebirge stadium. “Thanks to the stadium brigade, coaching team, team, staff and numerous fans, the pitch in the Erzgebirgsstadion is green again,” reported the third division team a few hours before kick-off. And that ultimately made Union head coach Steffen Baumgart happy. “A big thank you to Aue for making the game possible despite the difficult conditions. A huge thank you not only to the club, but also to the fans. That is very important,” said Baumgart.
The birthday child: Speaking of Steffen Baumgart: The Köpenicker cult coach celebrated his 54th birthday on Monday. In a good mood, he got out of the team bus as the “Freie Presse” watched and accepted numerous congratulations from waiting Berliners, including those from Unioner cult stadium announcer Christian Arbeit and some Aue fans. Photos were of course also snapped on this occasion. To celebrate the day, Baumgart received a gift basket before kick-off. A nice gesture from FC Erzgebirge. The gift was presented by Michael Tarnat, the third division club’s new sports director.

Tarnat’s first act: The ex-national player and ex-Bayern professional was the center of attention a few minutes before the presentation was handed over when he introduced himself to press representatives in the Erzgebirgsstadion and answered the first questions. Tarnat explained that there is a lot of quality in the team and that the current third division table position does not match that quality at all. “The only question is why the horsepower didn’t come on the record. I have to ask myself and the boys that question and find out the answer,” said Tarnat.
120 minutes open sights: In sub-zero temperatures in the Erzgebirge, both teams played determinedly forward. Union Berlin, which had the best line-up and a three-man attack in the first half, created a number of chances, but sometimes left some of them careless. From Auer’s perspective, the goals conceded could have been avoided. And that’s not all: Offensively, the Härtel team had many promising opportunities in 120 minutes, but as in everyday league life, the Violets didn’t make enough of their chances. Still a construction site for the Erzgebirge people, who, however, acted more purposefully than in the past. Either way: In the end it was a deserved, narrow victory for the Bundesliga club.
The trainers’ voices: For both teams it was about getting match practice again. In the end, both sides were able to live well with the performance of their teams. “In the end we win the first 60 minutes, we deservedly lose the second,” was Baumgart’s conclusion. “We can be very satisfied with the test,” explained Aue coach Härtel, who also noted: “But we also know that a Bundesliga team approaches a game like this differently than a third division team, so we shouldn’t overestimate it.”
The young players: With Maxim Kindel, Luis Pohlenz and Quentin Fraulob, three young U19 players received playing time. According to Härtel, the last two in particular did their job very well. “Fraulob is a good box-to-box player who always goes deep and supports the attacks. And Pohlenz also did a very good job and was robust in the duels. These are guys who have often trained with us,” said Härtel. With their appearances, they are likely to have recommended themselves for further test match appearances with the professionals.
