The archery is a real institution in Falaise (Calvados)focused on formation of the young people and by its numerous national titles collected in its history.
Its current president, Jean-Charles Bellot, has been licensed there since 2001.
At the time, it was a friend who was doing it who encouraged me to come and try it. I did judo. Archery appealed to me and that’s how I started. We were a lot of young people… Competitions followed then investment within the club.
Today, the club has 78 members, aged from 8 years old to Firmin, the oldest at 70 years old. In 2016, there were 102 licensees, a record year. What qualities do you need to become a good archery competitor?
“Of course you have to be calm and focused. It seems obvious but it’s a sport that calms young people who are too fast at first. »
The club has three federal coaches and two assistant coaches. “To organize a competition, a club must have a referee in the club. A member of the club wishes to enter refereeing training, it is two years of training. We are booked every weekend from mid-October to the end of January… So you need a lot of motivation! »
A superb room in Falaise
The Jimmy Sobol room is well known among practitioners. You can train there every day. “We must thank the town hall of Falaise, the Community of Municipalities and the federation for their subsidies without which we could not exist. »
Each year, the ESF archery plans to replace a third of the straw wall, necessary for safety. “It’s a special straw, fire-resistant, which comes from Belgium…” Is this an expensive sport?
Some bows are expensive, even very expensive; but when someone joins the club, we can rent a small amount of equipment. We only recommend purchasing the quiver and arrows.
The youth license costs €36, the adult license can go up to €106 but, from March 1st, it is a discovery license at €40. “We welcome beginners all year round; there is no deadline. »
Antoine, Beursault shooting champion, is a young person who is involved in the club. The same goes for Antoine Cuvigny, U21, who stands out. He ranked 1st in the department, indoors and outdoors, in the Beursault shooting, as well as 1st in Normandy.
What is the principle of Beursault shooting? The archer shoots only one arrow, at 50 meters, then recovers his arrow which he shoots again for the return journey. A corridor with two shooting ranges of sorts.
A second competition organized in April
After the success of the November competition which attracted 170 archers, a second competition will be organized in Falaise in April 2026.
We will welcome Pierre-Julien Deloche, ex-n°1 in compound arch, with his partner, physical and mental trainer at the National Federation, for an improvement course. We will open registrations as a priority to archers from Calvados but the Falais club should be able to be represented by 2 or 3 archers.
Even before, on March 8, the Falais section will host the youth departmental team championship, a friendly championship.
