The game in Utrecht, Netherlands, was actually supposed to start at 9 p.m. But kick-off was pushed back by almost an hour.
According to Dutch media reports, the reason for this is that the away fan sector had to be evacuated before the start of the game. According to the reports, fans of the visiting team from Belgium who had traveled with them gained access to the stadium without ticket and security checks. Up to 100 people entered the stadium area illegally – possibly without tickets and in any case without security checks.
That’s why the security forces decided to clear the away fans’ block. The game could therefore not start. “Upon entry, a large group of Genk fans broke through the security barriers and joined other fans in the guest block. This group was neither subjected to an ID check nor a search. This poses significant security risks. For this reason, the 300 people in the stadium’s guest block will be expelled and searched. The remaining buses with KRC Genk fans cannot be allowed in for the time being,” said the mayor’s office.
The evacuation was completed at 9:19 p.m. Fans should now be searched again, so only people with valid tickets should come back into the stadium. The kick-off finally took place at 9:50 p.m.
