Lots of shade, but also a little light, that’s how Tuesday can be summed up from the perspective of German tennis. One of the DTB’s greatest hopes was particularly badly hit.
Ella Seidel will surely want to erase this game from her memory! The 20-year-old number 78 in the world rankings was given a second chance at the WTA tournament in Hobart, but missed it with a bang.
Seidel, who had actually failed in the qualifying final to Katie Volynets from the USA, but subsequently slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, was mercilessly demonstrated in the first round by the Hungarian Anna Bindar (number 75 in the world rankings).
After just over 60 minutes, Bondar used her first match point to complete the crushing 6:0-6:1 victory.
Seidel struggled with her serve throughout the entire match, couldn’t get a single break point and was simply clearly inferior in all respects.
Only Tatjana Maria is holding up the German colors in Hobart. The 38-year-old (number 42 in the world rankings) prevailed in the duel of veteran stars against the 45-year-old former number one Venus Williams from the USA. Maria will face Bondar in the round of 16.
Even below the WTA series, some German players had to pack their bags early. At the W75 tournament in Nonthaburi, Thailand, Jule Niemeier (number 250 in the world rankings) as the number one seed lost 5:7 and 5:7 to the Japanese Rina Saigo (number 309 in the world rankings).
At the W50 event in Manchester, Eva Bennemann (number 383 in the world rankings) missed a surprise against the Swiss Celine Naef (number 302 in the world rankings) and Anna Petkovic (number 661 in the world rankings) against Anouk Vrancken Peeters (number 289 in the world rankings). Such a negative nature befell Noha Noma Akugue (number 269 in the world rankings), who had to admit defeat to the Bulgarian Elizara Yaneva.
Things went better for the German tennis men
From a German perspective, only Tessa Brockmann (number 288 in the world rankings) was able to reach the round of 16 on Tuesday. The 20-year-old hardly gave Betrise Zeltina from Latvia a chance at 6:1 and 6:2.
Overall, things went better for the men: At the Challenger in Glasgow, a quartet of Tom Getzsch (number 283 in the world rankings), Marvin Möller (number 459 in the world rankings), Daniel Masur (number 510 in the world rankings) and Henri Squire (number 276 in the world rankings) reached the round of 16, only Christoph Negritu (number 359 in the world rankings) missed the round of the last 16.
There were also successes at the small M15 tournament in Cadolzburg: 18-year-old Max Schönhaus (number 612 in the world rankings) had more problems than expected at the start, but in the end he defeated the Latvian Karlis Ozolins (number 964 in the world rankings) 6:7, 6:4 and 7:6.
Yannik Kelm (number 836 in the world rankings), Marc Majdandzic (number 935 in the world rankings) and Sydney Zick (number 1289 in the world rankings) also reached the round of 16. Zick managed a surprising victory against third-seeded Czech Matthew Donald (number 599 in the world rankings).
