Dino Toppmöller is no longer coach of Eintracht Frankfurt. After the weak start to 2026, those responsible pulled the ripcord. It is still unclear who will be his successor.
Eintracht Frankfurt and coach Dino Toppmöller are going their separate ways. The club reported this on Sunday afternoon, confirming the information from hr-sport. “The decision is the result of a comprehensive sporting and structural analysis of the past few weeks, taking into account the impressions of the first three games in the new calendar year,” said the report.
Krösche criticizes “declining development”
“Dino Toppmöller has always fully identified with Eintracht Frankfurt and worked with great passion for this club every day,” says sports director Markus Krösche: “We greatly appreciate his technical expertise, his professionalism, his meticulous way of working and his humane approach to the team. Nevertheless, after intensive internal evaluation, we in the sporting leadership and together on the board have come to the conclusion that we need a new sporting impulse due to the declining development in the last few weeks. Our claim, as Eintracht So far this season, we have not done justice to Frankfurt’s commitment to dynamic, aggressive and compact football.”
Toppmöller himself also had his say in the official report. “I would have loved to continue working with this team and continue to face the challenges that are there. But I accept the decision,” he said. “I went to Eintracht every day with great passion and joy and, regardless of the current unsatisfactory situation, which is undoubtedly there, I am proud of what we have achieved together over the past two and a half years.”
Toppmöller has been Hessen’s coach since the summer of 2023. He led Eintracht into the Champions League last season – the first coach ever to decide on the Bundesliga placement.
Eintracht has a weak start to the year
In the current season, however, the Frankfurt team under Toppmöller only showed mixed performances. At the start of the year there were nine goals conceded in three games and only two points.
After the 3-3 draw in Bremen last Friday, Krösche avoided making a clear commitment to Toppmöller. There was a crisis meeting on Saturday – with the result that Toppmöller now has to leave.
Schmitt and Meier are in charge of Eintracht in the Champions League
The Frankfurters have to play in the Champions League against Qarabag Agdam on Wednesday (6.45 p.m.). U21 head coach Dennis Schmitt and U19 coach Alexander Meier will be on the sidelines on an interim basis, Eintracht announced. It is still unclear who will take over permanently afterwards.
“Dennis Schmitt and Alexander Meier are ready to take responsibility for Eintracht Frankfurt in this challenging situation,” said Krösche. “This gives us the time we need to fill the coaching position permanently.”
