The tournament is open to members and regular players of East Lothian Badminton Association clubs.
Players were divided into four groups, with each player partnering everyone in their group to play six games up to 30 points in each.
The winners and runners-up of each group then progressed to the semi-finals.
The competition dates back to 1997, where it was played in the now-defunct Inveresk Badminton Club as a men’s doubles tournament.
However, when numbers declined in Inveresk, the competition was opened up to women and men from across the county.
In 2017, the Christmas Cracker trophy was renamed in memory of Andrew ‘Andy’ Broadley, a member of Aubigny Badminton Club who was sadly killed in a motorcycle accident.
In the previous year’s contest, Mr Broadley had played his way through to victory alongside Martin Jackman, beating a pairing that included his daughter Rachel Broadley and Norrie Sloan in the final.
The winners of the Andy Broadley Cup for 2025 were Murray White and Derek Paterson (Wallyford BC). Runners-up were John Hamilton (Aubigny BC) and Juned Ahmed (Dunbar BC).
Giving feedback to the organisers’ after the event, one player said: “I just wanted to let you know how appreciated yesterday was! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was so clear how much effort you had put into making it run so smoothly – so thank you! Without folk like you (and your cracking helpers) East Lothian badminton would be all the poorer.”
Another player added: “It was an absolute pleasure helping you (in my small part) at this tournament. You organise and run an excellent tournament very efficiently and this is really impressive. It is such a friendly and yet very competitive day, and really enjoyed by all players. The games were great to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed my time helping.”
