New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye did not practice Friday due to illness, coach Mike Vrabel said.
Maye’s absence, nine days before Super Bowl LX between the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, comes as he deals with a right shoulder injury suffered during last Sunday’s AFC final.
“Over the last six weeks we have had several players sick. So we’re trying, once again, to do what’s best for the player and the team. I am doing everything to preserve everyone’s health and prevent the spread of the virus,” Vrabel explained.
Maye participated in practice on a limited basis Thursday due to his shoulder injury. During yesterday’s practice session, open to reporters, neither Maye nor the team’s other quarterbacks completed any passes.
Vrabel said Maye’s shoulder responded “favorably.”
Maye hadn’t missed a practice all season before Friday. He was present at the training center earlier in the day and participated in meetings, according to Vrabel.
“I can’t wait to be ready,” Maye said Thursday. “It’s the game of dreams, so I can’t wait to step on the field and have the chance to play in the Super Bowl. »
Asked if his shoulder injury could limit his ability to throw the ball during the game, Maye said, “No, I don’t think so. That’s why we have physical trainers. I will do everything to be 100%. I’m sure I’ll get there, if not 100%, I’ll at least be 99%. »
In Maye’s absence at practice, nine-year veteran Joshua Dobbs led the offense during drills, followed by Tommy DeVito, who is entering his third year.
Patriots players will have a day off Saturday before the team leaves for California on Sunday. The Patriots must conduct four practices on site.
