Djokovic Australian Open 2026: Eligibility & Future

Follow us on:

Novak Djokovic is the record winner at the Australian Open. The 38-year-old Serb triumphed ten times in Melbourne and won the titles in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023. But there is a big question mark behind his participation in the 2026 tournament.

Most recently, Djokovic withdrew his participation in the “Adelaide International” – the preparatory tournament for the Australian Open. The tennis star explained that he doesn’t feel physically fit enough and wants to concentrate fully on the Australian Open. But it is still unclear whether he will play at all.

Novak Djokovic wants to play at the Australian Open 2026

Djokovic had previously skipped tournaments such as the ATP Finals and the Paris Masters – for health reasons and because of season planning. The Serb is getting on in years. His former looseness and lightness are gone – other players like Jannik Sinner dominate the sport.

But Djokovic wants to know again. In his “living room” at the Australian Open he would have a theoretical chance of winning his 25th Grand Slam title. “Nole” is already alone at the top with 24 Grand Slam victories ahead of Rafael Nadal (22) and Roger Federer (20).

Djokovic has not yet arrived in Melbourne. Fans are hoping he will face Frances Tiafoe this Thursday as part of the Opening Week Showdown. But this encounter seems questionable – especially since Djokovic has recently been struggling with shoulder problems.

“Nole” has to cancel his AusOpen participation

Over the course of the season, Djokovic’s back continued to bother him, which seems to be due to his advanced age. Even the once fittest player on the tour can no longer compensate for wear and tear and overload. There are also other problems.

Djokovic had to end his semi-final match at the Australian Open 2025 against Alexander Zverev early due to a torn muscle in his left thigh. But as we all know, hope dies last. All Djokovic fans can hope. Shortly before the tournament started, he posted video content from the tournament.

Although this is older video material. But it at least suggests that Djokovic is mentally at the tournament and will try everything to be at the Australian Open in 2026. Ultimately, his body will decide whether he will be there for the 21st time Down Under.
