Olivier Deschacht, the 44-year-old former footballer and current analyst, is once again in the spotlight. But this time not for sporting reasons. The former Anderlecht player caused a big shock with a revelation that no one saw coming.

Criminal record that no one saw coming
On Monday morning, Deschacht appeared before the police court in Ghent, after he was caught behind the wheel with his mobile phone in his hand on February 12 last year.
An extensive criminal record was open before the judge, and the court’s patience appears to be running out. “You already have an extensive criminal record. This has to stop,” the judge said sternly to Deschacht HLN.
Alcohol involved
The former Anderlecht defender, who was convicted several times in the past for traffic offences, had little to offer in return. In 2022 and 2024 he was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The details of the two other previous convictions have not been released, but the overall picture shows a pattern that the court took seriously. During the check in Gentbrugge, it also turned out that Deschacht was driving with an expired driver’s license. For that offense he received a fine of 400 euros, fully suspended. For using his mobile phone behind the wheel, the judge imposed a one-month driving ban and a fine of 600 euros, according to reports. HLN.
The driving ban applies immediately and should make the message clear: road safety comes first, regardless of your fame. Several BVs, including Ruben Van Gucht and Tom Waes, have been discredited in recent months for approximately the same offenses.
