Even in a league accustomed to constant movement, some decisions leave deeper marks than others. De’Aaron Fox’s departure from Sacramento is one that tells a story that is more human than strategic.
Behind the transfer to San Antonio in 2025, made official after months of rumors, lies in reality a sincere attachment to an organization that has seen him grow. An attachment that De’Aaron Fox was not ready to break so easily, despite a context that had become increasingly uncertain.
For eight seasons, the leader embodied the hope of the Kings. He carried the franchise on his shoulders during difficult years, until this long-awaited return to the playoffs in 2023, after sixteen long seasons of absence. Fox wanted to preserve this link. His agent Rich Paul also revealed that his first instinct was to stay loyal to Sacramento, whatever the cost.
When sporting reality catches up with loyalty
In a recent speaking engagement, Paul explained his client’s state of mind when the discussions began to emerge. “One of the first things he said to me was, ‘Rich, I really want to see this thing through to the end here in Sacramento, because they drafted me.’confided the agent, emphasizing the importance of the emotional factor in this decision.
Despite this desire, the collective dynamic never really took off over time. After the euphoria of the playoffs, the results stagnated, and the signals sent by the franchise gradually changed. Rich Paul acknowledged that the situation was becoming difficult to ignore. “We handled it very professionally. We had to keep playing, every situation is different, and he trusted me to present him with coherent options for his future.”he explained.
Before San Antonio took action, other avenues were seriously explored. Orlando was notably among the credible destinations. “Orlando, San Antonio… teams that needed a leader, but above all pieces already in place so that he could integrate immediately”clarified Paul, showing that the sporting project remained central in the final choice.
Once he arrived at Spurs, Fox quickly dispelled any doubts. His adaptation was fluid, almost natural. Alongside Victor Wembanyama, he has found a balance that highlights his speed, creation and outside shooting. Automatisms also developed with Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, reinforcing the idea of a collective in full construction. Even if he had not imagined this departure at the start, De’Aaron Fox today embodies a new face of San Antonio. And if loyalty kept him in Sacramento for a long time, it is now the ambition and coherence of the Texan project which give new meaning to the rest of his career.
