Crans-Montana will probably host the Olympic ski tournament in twelve years’ time. This can be read in the bid from Switzerland, which is the only candidate still in discussions with the International Olympic Committee for the organization of the Winter Games in 2038.
In Crans-Montana, which has been in the news in recent weeks due to the New Year’s Eve café fire that killed forty people, Alpine Skiing World Cup races have been held for years.
In three weeks, just before the Winter Games start in Milan, this year’s World Cup competition is scheduled to take place in Crans-Montana. Next year the ski resort will host the world championships.
It is therefore not the case that Crans-Montana will be awarded the Olympic ski competitions because of the deadly café fire. Sion, which unsuccessfully competed to organize this year’s Winter Games, also wanted the ski competitions to take place in Crans-Montana.
The 2038 Winter Games have not yet been officially awarded to Switzerland, but the country is the preferred candidate of the IOC, which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Alpine country last hosted the Winter Games in 1948.
Other locations
The Swiss Olympic Committee has also designated cities for other sports. The long track speed skating and curling will have to take place in Geneva, the short track speed skating and figure skating in Lausanne, where the opening ceremony will also take place.
The Sankt Moritz bobsleigh track will be used for sledding sports, including skeleton, while ski jumping will take place in Engelberg and biathlon in Lenzerheide. The ice hockey matches are divided between Zurich, Zug and Lugano.
Switzerland had previously put itself forward as a candidate for the 2030 Winter Games, but they were ultimately awarded to France. Four years later it was the turn of Salt Lake City in the United States to organize the event.
