Club Brugge & Union: Millions Earned in European Football

After the defeats against Sporting and Arsenal, it seemed as if Club would not make it to the Champions League this season. But look: six out of six against Kairat Almaty and Marseille, and blue-black finishes a very good 19th in the League Phase. And that also has financial consequences: Wednesday evening’s profit yielded no less than 8.65 million euros extra.

Magic cape

Just count: 2.7 million euros for the three points, 1 million euros for qualifying in the play-offs and a 4.95 million euro bonus for place 19. That currently brings the total prize money for 10 points to 31,011,176.00 euros, including the ‘redistributed draws’ from other matches. Add to that the value pillar of 18 to 19 million after this season, and Club is currently already reaching the magical mark of 50 million.

A whole lot of money could be added to that in February. Although there is definitely a big hit waiting in the Champions League play-offs. Club will face Atlético or Juventus. And if Blue-Black does stunt, an extra of 11 million euros awaits. For the record: with a total revenue of more than 60 million euros, last season’s Champions League campaign broke all Belgian records. It is far from certain whether things will go so well at Club this year.

Union may also add more than 30 million euros

No intermediate round for Union, but thanks to the nine points achieved, the Champions League participation did yield a nice amount of money for the national champion.

Due to last season’s title and direct qualification for the League Phase, Union was already assured of 18.62 million euros. Thanks to the club’s ten-year coefficient, another 1.1 million euros were added. Approximately another 4.8 million euros was also added through commercial and media rights. Even before the start of the campaign, it was certain that more than 24 million euros would be raised.

But the good results also added a nice extra. A victory in the League Phase earns a club 2.1 million euros. In this case, Union was allowed to describe another 6.3 million euros. The 27th place in the final ranking of the League Phase yielded 2.75 million euros.

In total, Union earned around 33.5 million euros in its first ever Champions League campaign. Although that amount may fluctuate somewhat, as the amount of the so-called value pillar is not yet completely clear. Union will only have complete clarity about this after the season. (TJM)
