Cloppenburg – From Cloppenburg’s perspective, the 74th German Badminton Championships had a tailor-made start. Cloppenburger Marius Meyer (MTV Vechelde, formerly TV Cloppenburg) and his doubles partner Lena Moses prevailed in the opening game against Linus Emmerich/Marie Fein. They won the first set 21:17. “In the second set, however, we were overrun,” said Meyer in an interview with our editorial team. Meyer/Moses lost 14:21. “Then in the third set we got things going again and showed a very good performance,” said the 29-year-old happily. He was also very impressed by the atmosphere in the hall. “The students created a great atmosphere. It was fun,” said Meyer.

He didn’t expect that he would start so well in the title fights. “I hardly had any time to prepare for the DM because I had just finished my traineeship,” says Meyer. From February he will start as a teacher at the BBS am Museumsdorf. Meyer also actively helped with the construction in the hall, which started last Tuesday. Even during his break from play on Thursday, he didn’t keep his feet still. For example, he cleaned up the stands. “There’s always something to do. I also use the break in the game to coach my teammates or grab a bite to eat,” said Meyer.

The sport of badminton has a great fascination for him, continued Meyer. “I don’t know of any other sport that is as varied as badminton,” reported Meyer. In addition, things are very harmonious among the active participants. Hosting a German championship is a great thing for a club like TV Cloppenburg, he said. “A competition like this helps a lot to make the sport more popular among young people. We already noticed this development last year when the DM was held in Cloppenburg for the first time,” says Meyer, hoping that the event will provide a further boost.
Markus Bennewitz, the tournament director of the German championships, was also pleased with the good start: “We can be very satisfied. Ticket sales went very well and the students created a great atmosphere.”
