Christo Popov: Historic Finals Win & Emotional Reaction

A historic day for French sport. This Sunday, December 21, Christo Popov made history by becoming the first French badminton player to win the badminton Finals, the last tournament of the season bringing together the eight best players of the year. Winner with style (21-19, 21-9) of the Chinese Shi Yu Qi, world number 1, the player from Fos-sur-Mer, 8th in the world hierarchy, savored this feat at the microphone of RMC Sport.

A new status to assume

We are very happy to break barriers and do historic things. France is growing, we have more and more good playerslaunched Popov after his victory, highlighting French badminton which is improving. If we had said fifteen years ago that we were going to have two people in the top 10 in men’s singles (Christo Popov 8e, Alex Lanier 7e)it would have been unthinkable when we have never had one in the top 20. Now we also have three in the top 15 with my brother (Toma Popov 15e). Honestly it’s incredible.

French players who have never been so strong and Christo Popov who will see his status evolve, with opponents who will have a new look at his game.

The people who are going to play against me are obviously going to think that. It will change their outlook as well as mine. They will say to themselves “he won the Finals”, I will be a bit of a favorite, so everyone will play relaxed, play hard and have nothing to lose against merecognized the French badista. Obviously it’s a status that I must now assume, it’s a new challenge for me.
