Since its first edition in its current form in 1995, this is only the third time that a Classic has been the poster for this competition. For now, each club has one success. The Marseillais first, in 2010, after a penalty shootout (0-0, 5 tab to 4), then the PSG, more recently, in 2021 (2-1). We revisit these two precedents.
Édouard Cissé at the end of the suspense
On July 28, 2010, in an incandescent Olympic stadium in Radès, where more than 50,000 spectators were seated, Olympique de Marseille, reigning French champion and winner of the League Cup a few months earlier against Bordeaux, faced its eternal Parisian rival, winner of the Coupe de France.
PSG, coached by Antoine Kombouaré, finished only 13th in Ligue 1. The Parisian attack, led by Mevlut Erding and Peguy Luyindula, responded to the few chances created by Marseillais Mamadou Samassa. After 90 minutes, the score is still goalless, despite the dazzling performances of Phocaean Hatem Ben Arfa, who came on as a substitute.
In the end, the Marseillais won during a penalty shootout (5-4). Mandanda stops Luyindula’s attempt, Coupet that of Lucho. But Giuly once again saw his shot pushed back by the Marseille goalkeeper named man of the match. It is Edouard Cissé, the former Parisian, who offers victory to OM.
The Pochettino era is off to a good start
We had to wait more than ten years to see the two clubs meet again. The meeting initially scheduled for August 2020 was finally held five months later, on January 13, 2021, in an empty Bollaert stadium, due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
During this decade, the dynamics of the two clubs were reversed. PSG, bought by Qatar in 2011, largely dominates its southern rival, even if the latter managed in September 2020 to score its first victory (1-0) against PSG at the Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 since November 2011.
Neymar, returning from injury, starts the match on the bench. But the Brazilian proved decisive by scoring the break penalty at the end of the match. At the end of the first period, Mauro Icardi showed the way, Dimitri Payet reducing the score at the very end of regulation time. The Parisians won their tenth Champions Trophy, the first title of the Mauricio Pochettino era, called up to replace Thomas Tuchel during the winter break.
