After an unconvincing American parenthesis, Louis Rees-Zammit is back in rugby union. Arriving at Bristol Bears and selected again with Wales, the young 24-year-old winger returns to the world he voluntarily left in January 2024.
At just 22 years old, Louis Rees-Zammit was considered one of the greatest promises in world rugby. His explosiveness and speed made him one of the most feared wingers in Europe. With Gloucester, he had scored 42 tries in 77 appearances and already had 32 caps with the Leek XV when he suddenly decided to change direction and try his luck in the NFL.
His adventure on the other side of the Atlantic, which began at the start of 2024, saw him join the Kansas City Chiefs then the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite rapid adaptation and signs of progression, the Welshman has never played any official match in the NFL. A reality that ultimately brought him back to where it all began: rugby.
Without regrets, Rees-Zammit closed this parenthesis with lucidity. “I’ve decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby! It’s been a great experience but it’s time to come home”he wrote on social networks announcing his return in the summer of 2025.
A quick and efficient return
In the process, the 24-year-old Welshman signed up with the English Bristol, an ambitious Premiership club. When he arrived, he spoke of a “obvious choice”, convinced by the game project proposed by the Bears. Quickly integrated, Louis Rees-Zammit rediscovered sensations that he had clearly not lost: sharp calls, speed, ability to change a match with the ball in hand. A few weeks later, in October 2025, he also returned to the Welsh selection under new coach Steve Tandy for the autumn tour to challenge top world nations like Argentina or New Zealand. A return to the highest level which he will have left his mark with two tries scored during his two tenures.
In his first start with Bristol, he scored a 60-meter try in the last minute which sealed the Bears’ victory against Leicester (42-24). The Ashton Gate audience was already won over. After six championship matches, he already has four tries with impressive statistics: 614 meters covered, 17 defenders beaten and a double against Newcastle during the victory (36-27) at the end of 2025.
Similar performances to other players in the same position in the Premiership: in comparison, Exeter winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has 8 tries in 9 matches, 32 defenders beaten or 645 meters covered. Figures that confirm what everyone sees: the Welshman has returned in great shape to once again show his talent to the world. However, his defensive feverishness is a blemish with only 71% of successful tackles, an area in which the young player will need to improve to (re)become one of the very best in his position.
His American experience, even if it was not successful sportingly, seems to have brought him an additional form of maturity. Solid in contact, more constant in effort, Louis Rees-Zammit appears today as a complete player.
In a season where the Premiership and Champions Cup are particularly close, this return to form is timely. As Bristol prepares to host UBB in the Champions Cup this weekend, the Welsh winger represents a threat to the Gironde defense as his ability to exploit the slightest space remains intact. This meeting also promises a great duel with Louis Bielle-Biarrey, the star winger of the Top 14. The confrontation between these two fast players could well be one of the hot points of this meeting. Bordeaux therefore knows that it will have a lot to do to contain Louis Rees-Zammit because on the pitch, his speed remains a formidable weapon.
